Solar radiation, and specifically solar spectral irradiance in EUV, influence the Earth’s atmosphere. It affects the Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere (ITM) system. Variations in atmospheric density depend on solar irradiance, solar wind and geomagnetic storms, generating heat in the neutral atmosphere. Thus, satellites flying at high altitude regions experience drag force increase. These effects reduce the life of satellites and introduce significant errors in orbital tracking. Reliable measurements of solar spectral irradiance (EUV) over long time scales are necessary to understand its effect on the upper atmosphere. Specifically, to improve the neutral density predictions in the thermosphere, avoiding satellite loss due to the drag and avoiding collisions.

La radiación solar, específicamente la irradiancia en Extremo Ultravioleta (EUV) es importante porque influencia directamente la atmósfera de la Tierra, por ejemplo el sistema de la Ionosfera-Termosfera-Mesosfera (ITM). Las variaciones en la densidad atmosférica dependen de la irradiancia solar, el viento solar y las tormentas geomagnéticas, generando calentamiento en la atmósfera neutra. Así consecuentemente los satélites que vuelan en regiones altas experimentan un incremento en la fuerza de arrastre. Estos efectos disminuyen la vida útil de los satélites e introducen significativos errores en el seguimiento orbital. Por lo tanto medidas confiables de la irradiancia solar en extremo ultravioleta en largas escalas de tiempo observadas o/y desde modelos, son necesarias para entender su efecto en la atmósfera alta, específicamente para mejorar las predicciones de la densidad neutral en la termosfera, evitar pérdidas de los satélites debido al arrastre y evitar colisiones.

We present a comparison between the bosonic Feynman propagator in an external magnetic field calculated by Ritus’ method with summation over Landau levels and its integral expression obtained via Schwinger’s proper time method. Also, we have investigated the behavior boson system in a thermal reservoir under an increase in the external magnetic field strength.

The Brazilian Center for Physical Research (CBPF), like other teaching and research institutions, was also the target of persecution and purges during the civil-military dictatorship, but with certain specificities as it was a civil society organization. Initially identified as a partner by military and business segments in order to provide the country with control of nuclear technology, it gradually began to be seen by the information and repression system as an opponent to the regime, due to the positions of many of its researchers in defense of the creation of an environment suitable for scientific research and autonomous technological development. Purges carried out by the institution’s Director removed its main leaders and researchers who would come to assume a prominent role in Brazilian physics. Despite some support for repressive actions, the majority of the technical-scientific staff played an important role in resistance, translated in different strategies.

O Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas (CBPF), à semelhança de outras instituições de ensino e pesquisa, também foi alvo de perseguições e expurgos durante a ditadura civil-militar, mas com certas especificidades por ser uma organização da sociedade civil. Identificado inicialmente como parceiro por segmentos militares e empresariais no sentido de propiciar ao país o domínio da tecnologia nuclear, aos poucos começou a ser visto pelos órgãos de informação e repressão como um espaço de opositores ao regime, devido às posições de muitos de seus pesquisadores em defesa da criação de um ambiente próprio para a pesquisa científica e o desenvolvimento tecnológico autônomo. Expurgos levados a cabo pela Direção da instituição afastaram suas principais lideranças e pesquisadores que viriam a assumir papel de destaque na física brasileira. Apesar de alguns apoios às ações repressivas, a maioria do quadro técnico-científico teve um importante papel de resistência, traduzida por variadas formas.

The present work has as goal to present an overview on the recent literature related to Physics Teaching involving the use of computational simulations. Works from the Revista Brasileira de Ensino de Física (RBEF) and Caderno Brasileiro de Ensino de Física (CBEF) were selected, which show the potentialities and challenges that the use of computational simulations presents for Physics Teaching. As potentialities, the works highlight that simulations: expand the power of observation and understanding of the phenomenon being worked on, present the content in a more interesting way for students, bring greater interaction in the classroom, lead to a better visualization of abstract concepts and that the student becomes an active agent in the classroom. The possible challenges that were cited are: difficulty in the process of modeling the phenomenon, lack of further research in the area, the need for educators to be able to show the limitations that the model presents, the need for schools to be equipped with computers and the internet, which educators need of a preparation to learn to work both with modeling and with the simulation software itself.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar um panorama geral das publicações na área de Ensino de Física que envolvem o uso de simulações computacionais. Foram selecionados trabalhos da Revista Brasileira de Ensino de Física (RBEF) e do Caderno Brasileiro de Ensino de Física (CBEF), os quais mostram as potencialidades e desafios que o uso de simulações computacionais apresenta para o Ensino de Física. Como potencialidades os trabalhos destacam que as simulações: ampliam o poder de observação e compreensão do fenômeno que está sendo trabalhado, apresentam o conteúdo de forma mais interessante para os educandos, trazem maior interação em sala de aula, levam a uma melhor visualização de conceitos abstratos e que educando se torna agente ativo em sala de aula. Os possíveis desafios elencados foram: dificuldade do processo de modelagem do fenômeno, falta de pesquisa na área, dificuldade do educador em conseguir mostrar as limitações que o modelo apresenta, necessidade das escolas estar equipadas com computadores e internet e falta de formação para o educador aprender a trabalhar tanto como modelagem, tanto com o próprio software de simulação.

In this paper, we expose and compare two different physical interpretations of Bernoulli’s equation. One interpretation is that pressure must be a type of potential energy density, and Bernoulli’s equation means the uniformity of the mechanical energy density in each streamline. However, the pressure behaves as potential energy density only for steady flows, a situation that includes Bernoulli’s equation. Another interpretation is that pressure is not a type of potential energy density, the mechanical energy density changes along the streamlines, but the work from pressure balances the energy variation. The last interpretation implies that enthalpy density is uniform in each streamline. We conclude that the two interpretations are valid, it is not possible to exclude a particular interpretation, and both of them do not violate the law of conservation of energy.

The 1981 classic book by I. E. Irodov entitled “Problems in General Physics”, well known as Irodov among students, contains two problems of pursuit between particles with constant speeds in 2 dimensions that inspired variants in recent Physics Olympiads. In this paper, we present in a single text the most studied versions of these problems, including their solutions and computational simulations using advanced features of Desmos, a free online graphics system. Furthermore, we show the calculations of the exact pursuit curves and show that they coincide with the computer simulations. Finally, we consider new natural variants, such as pursuit involving more points at different trajectories, and we obtain computational results for them.

O clássico livro de I. E. Irodov intitulado “Problems in General Physics” de 1981, bem conhecido como Irodov entre os estudantes, contém dois problemas de perseguição entre partículas com velocidades constantes em 2 dimensões que inspiraram variantes em recentes Olimpíadas de Física e vestibulares do IME e do ITA. Neste artigo, apresentamos em um único texto as versões mais estudadas desses problemas, incluindo soluções e simulações computacionais usando recursos avançados do Desmos, um sistema gráfico online e gratuito. Além disso, mostramos os cálculos das curvas exatas das trajetórias da perseguição nas variantes e mostramos que coincidem com as simulações computacionais. Finalmente, consideramos novas variantes naturais, como perseguição envolvendo mais pontos em diferentes trajetórias, e obtemos resultados computacionais para elas.

The ancient problem of tides, phenomena observed since the humanity early days, still today provides important analysis. In this work, starting with the study of tides, but considering the law gravity, we determine Moon’s characteristics, such as mass, volume, and some aspects of its chemical composition. This approach is carried out by using an inverse-like method, proposed by Henrique Fleming. The formulation provides a way to revisit the Galilei qualitative studies about tides, starting exclusively from the Earth motion. We point out the importance of galilean formulation, what is under criticism in some studies.

O antigo problema das marés, fenômeno observado desde os primórdios da humanidade, ainda nos lega análises importantes. Nesse trabalho, a partir do estudo desse fenômeno, mas levando em conta a gravitação, determinamos características da Lua, tais como como a massa, volume e aspectos da composição química. Essa determinação é feita usando um tipo de método inverso, proposto por Henrique Fleming. Essa abordagem nos permite reexaminar a análise qualitativa de Galilei sobre o problema, partindo exclusivamente dos movimentos da Terra. Apontamos para a importância da formulação galileana, criticada em certos estudos.

In introductory approaches to Mechanics, whether in higher education or basic education, discussions regarding the distinctions between the concepts of inertial and non-inertial frames of reference tend to be confined to Dynamics, especially with the establishment of Newton’s laws, devoid of experimental analyses. Nevertheless, the notion of a frame of reference holds paramount significance for the characterization of motion, even within the strict purview of Kinematics. In this context, we aspire to underpin the concepts of inertial and non-inertial frames of reference through the exploration of an educational experimental activity conducted via video analysis. Specifically, we inquire into the motion of a small sphere in three situations of relative motion between two frames of reference: uniform rectilinear motion; uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion, with ace-location and velocity in the same direction; and uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion, with acceleration and velocity in opposite directions. We derive a kinematic description grounded in Galilean Relativity’s Principle and the transformation relationships between inertial and non-inertial frames of reference, in addition to the adjustments of the motion curves acquired through video analysis. We proffer the notion that other facets such as scale invariance, temporal simultaneity, and inquiries related to the historical development of the concepts of reference frame and absolute and relative motion can also be addressed in the discussions surrounding the proposed experiments.

Nas abordagens introdutórias de Mecânica, seja no ensino superior ou na educação básica, as discussões em torno das diferenças entre os conceitos de referencial inercial e não inercial costumam ser restritas à Dinâmica, especialmente com a definição das leis de Newton, sem análises experimentais. No entanto, a noção de referencial é fundamental para a caracterização dos movimentos, mesmo que do ponto de vista estrito da Cinemática. Neste contexto, objetivamos fundamentar os conceitos de referencial inercial e não inercial a partir da exploração de uma atividade experimental com fins didáticos desenvolvida por meio de videoanálise. Especificamente, investigamos o lançamento de uma pequena bola em três situações de movimento relativo entre dois referenciais: movimento retilíneo uniforme; movimento retilíneo uniformemente variado, com aceleração e velocidade de mesmo sentido; e movimento retilíneo uniformemente variado, com aceleração e velocidade em sentidos opostos. Obtemos uma descrição cinemática embasada no Princípio de Relatividade de Galileu e nas relações de transformação entre referenciais inerciais e não inerciais, além dos ajustes das curvas de movimento obtidas pela videoanálise. Sugerimos que outros aspectos, como: invariância de escala, simultaneidade no tempo, e questões históricas relacionadas aos conceitos de referencial, movimento absoluto e relativo, possam ser encaminhadas nas discussões dos experimentos propostos.

Contents related to the modern physics field involve the knowledge of the production and interaction of radiation with matter. The attenuation of the radiation evidences the macroscopic manifestation of this interaction. This study presents an apparatus intended for teaching practices to determine the lead mass attenuation coefficient for gamma-ray photons from a source of 137Cs (photons with energy of approximately 662 keV). Traditionally, this determination is performed using lead plates of known thicknesses. However, this focus generally produces discrepant results related to the mass attenuation coefficient adopted values, with deviations around 15%. In the approach presented here, which is innovative, the plates were replaced by small spheres or powders of the analyzed material (lead). The results show that this substitution significantly reduced the deviations from the theoretical values. In the best experimental condition, the errors were between 2% and 4% for the spheres and the powder, respectively. Among the advantages of the proposed method are the possibility of continuous variations in the thickness and the geometry of the attenuating material, and the analysis of the influence of porous systems on the measurement of radiation attenuation.

Conteúdos relacionados à área de Física Moderna envolvem o conhecimento da produção e interação da radiação com a matéria. A manifestação macroscópica dessa interação se evidencia pela atenuação da radiação incidente no material. Neste estudo, apresenta-se o uso de um aparato experimental destinado a práticas de ensino visando a determinação do coeficiente de atenuação do chumbo para fótons de raios gama provenientes de uma fonte de 137Cs (fótons com energia de aproximadamente 662 keV). Tradicionalmente, essa determinação é realizada utilizando-se como material absorvedor placas de chumbo de espessuras conhecidas. Entretanto, em geral, esse enfoque leva a resultados discrepantes em relação ao valor do coeficiente de atenuação teórico para o chumbo, com desvios em torno de 15%. No método aqui apresentado, sugere-se a substituição das placas por esferas ou pó de chumbo. Os resultados obtidos mostram que o método proposto reduziu sensivelmente os desvios do coeficiente de atenuação medido em relação aos valores teóricos (simulados). Na melhor condição experimental os erros ficaram entre 2 e 4%. Entre as grandes vantagens do método abordado estão à possibilidade de variações contínuas na espessura e na geometria do material absorvedor e análise da influência de sistemas porosos na medida da atenuação da radiação.

Contemporary gravimetry uses gravimeters to find the magnitude of gravitational acceleration (g) in a punctual manner on the Earth’s surface. This work considered the relevance of determining g in the didactic laboratory using the pendulum, making a careful analysis of the phenomena that affect the oscillating device, bringing contributions to the teaching of Classical Physics. The first, although modest, is effective, and proposes measuring the oscillation period using two smartphones. The second, a theoretical analysis of the effect of angular amplitude correlated to drag, on the period of pendulum oscillation. The third refers to the validation of two equations that provide the value of g like a function of latitude and altitude, with gravimetric data available on the IBGE website. At the Londrina campus of UTFPR, independent tests were carried out, allowing the value g U T F P R − L d = ( 9.7873 ± 0.0012 ) m ⋅ s − 2 to be obtained. To validate the methodology and verify its accuracy, the two equations that provide g as a function of altitude and latitude were compared with gravimetric data to define which would be most suitable for generating the reference value. This done, it was found that the experimentally obtained value differed by 0.001 m ⋅ s − 2 (0.01%).

A Gravimetria contemporânea vale-se de gravímetros para encontrar o módulo da aceleração gravitacional (g) de forma pontual na superfície terrestre. Esse trabalho considerou a pertinência da determinação de g no laboratório didático por intermédio do pêndulo, fazendo atenciosa análise dos fenômenos que afetam o dispositivo em oscilação, trazendo contribuições para o ensino da Física Clássica. A primeira, embora modesta, é eficaz, e propõe medir o período de oscilação empregando dois smartphones. A segunda, uma análise teórica acerca do efeito da amplitude angular correlacionada ao arrasto, sobre o período de oscilação do pêndulo. A terceira, refere-se à validação de duas equações que fornecem o valor de g em função da latitude e da altitude, com os dados gravimétricos disponíveis no site do IBGE. No campus Londrina da UTFPR, realizaram-se ensaios independentes, permitindo que se obtivesse o valor g U T F P R − L d = ( 9,7873 ± 0,0012 ) m ⋅ s − 2. Para a validação da metodologia e verificação da acuracidade, as duas equações que fornecem g em função da altitude e da latitude foram confrontadas com dados gravimétricos para definir qual seria mais adequada para gerar o valor de referência. Assim feito, verificou-se que o valor obtido experimentalmente divergia em 0,001 m ⋅ s − 2 (0,01%).

In this paper, we present a detailed deduction of the Cahn-Hilliard equation. It is a non-linear partial differential equation that continuously describes the dynamics of spinodal decomposition, i.e., spontaneous phase separation, of a binary mixture. From such an equation we can model systems that undergo phase separation toward the equilibrium, i.e., passive systems, and systems that are kept out of the equilibrium by the presence of either external forces or chemical reactions, i.e., active systems. To accomplish our main goal, we present the main concepts of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and from that, we obtain the Cahn-Hilliard equation by defining a general equation for the transport of matter and calculating the free energy for a homogeneous and non-homogeneous mixture of real fluids. By the end, we perform simulations of the Cahn-Hilliard equation and present two examples of passive and active systems that (quasi) suppress Ostwald ripening.

Quantum computing has attracted the attention of the scientific community in the past few decades. The development of quantum computers promises one path toward safer and faster ways to treat, extract, and transfer information. However, despite the significant advantages of quantum computing, the development of quantum devices operating at room temperature has been compromised by the thermal decoherence process. In addition, in most undergraduate and graduate quantum mechanics courses, the study of thermofield dynamics is usually neglected. In this scenario, this work presents a didactic approach to simulate thermal qubit systems through Thermofield Dynamics (TFD), applied in a quantum computing setup. The results show that the Bloch sphere representation for a qubit can be written in terms of the Bogoliubov transformation, which allows a practical construction for the thermal qubits in a quantum computing setup. Therefore, this work introduces thermofield dynamics through quantum computing to teachers and curious students interested in teaching and learning this important field of studying the temperature impacts on quantum protocols using the TFD technique.

Commonly, in Ordinary Differential Equations courses, equations with impulses or discontinuous forcing functions are studied. In this context, the Laplace Transform of the Dirac delta function and unit step function is taught, which are used as forcing functions in theoretical equations. However, application in real situations is also an important part of the learning process. In this sense, most books are flawed regarding the practical applications of this type of equation. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to study the solution of differential equations under the action of discontinuous forcing functions or impulses, contextualized in Physics or Engineering problems, using Laplace transforms. For this, this article analyzes some physical systems that are not so explored in the literature, such as the galvanometer, a circuit used inside an ammeter or voltmeter to measure current or voltage. In addition, we also studied an R-L-C circuit (Resistor, Inductor and Capacitor), using the Laplace Transform to find the capacitor voltage, demonstrating an extremely useful way for solving electrical circuits in series or in parallel.

This article brings up an introduction to computational physics and scientific programming through an application, the radioactive decay problem. This problem is solved computationally through two different approaches: numerical integration and stochastic simulation. The numerical integration is realised via the Runge-Kutta method, used to obtain numerical solutions of the ordinary differential equation describing the model dynamics, while the stochastic simulations are implemented via Monte Carlo simulations, where random numbers are used to guide decision making. A comparicion of the advantages of each method and its convenience is made and some examples of implementation of the algorithms presented in this work are also exhibited in different programming languages.

Neste artigo apresentamos uma introdução à física computacional e à programação científica a partir da aplicação em um problema de decaimento radioativo. Esse problema é resolvido computacionalmente a partir de duas abordagens distintas: integração numérica e simulação estocástica. A integração numérica é feita utilizando-se o método de Runge-Kutta, para a obtenção das soluções numéricas das equações diferenciais que regem a dinâmica do modelo, enquanto as simulações estocásticas são implementadas com o uso de simulações de Monte Carlo, em que números aleatórios são utilizados para tomadas de decisão. Uma comparação entre as vantagens e desvantagens de cada método e da conveniência de cada um deles é feita e alguns exemplos de implementação dos algoritmos aqui discutidos são também apresentados em diferentes linguagens de programação.

We provide a pedagogical calculation of the first two spacing distribution for a spin-1/2 XX chain in the presence of an external magnetic field. The results obtained from analytical expressions are compared with those from extensive quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The results obtained for the spacing distributions are used to describe the magnetic behavior of the system and contrasted with the standard analysis based on quantities such as the average energy, magnetization, and susceptibility. Finally, the equivalence between the analytical expressions for the spacing distributions provided by the second quantization formalism and those from the inter-particle distribution method is illustrated. As shown, the spacing distributions can be used as pedagogical examples of the use of the second quantization formalism in introductory courses of quantum statistical mechanics. Additionally, these distributions can be calculated easily from quantum Monte Carlo simulation and, therefore, can be used to illustrate this numerical method.
